Scholarship is the word that dare not speak its name Lecturers Experiences of Teaching on a Higher Education Programme in a Further Education College
The paper describes a small-scale research project which sought to examine the experiences and views of lecturers teaching on a higher education programme within a further education college. The research involved interviews with lecturers teaching on a BA (Hons) Combined Studies course and the findings in this article cover aspects which particularly affect the teaching staff. The themes discussed include professional identity in terms of FE and HE work, teaching undergraduate students and issues of lecturing across both FE and HE programmes. The positive and negative aspects of teaching HE are discussed at length.
The conclusion raises key issues such as funding/resource implications, staff timetabling and concern regarding the value attached to HE in FE where a managerial ethos does not promote scholarship. This paper is published in – Journal of Further and Higher Education Volume 26 (3) pp 273 - 286
