This discussion paper considers the issue of scholarly activity in FECs involved in the delivery of higher education courses. It considers the importance of scholarly activity in FE and how inherent difficulties can be resolved. The paper distinguishes scholarly activity from research and discussed how opportunities for each differ for both FEC and HEI staff. The paper considers the demands made on FEC staff in terms of teaching requirements, contractual issues and staff development, in comparison to HE, and whether a new definition of scholarly activity is required for FE. The discussion concludes with a number of suggestions for a way forward.
