About Us

City College Norwich was a pioneer within the FE sector in having the vision to establish a dedicated Research Centre in 1996. During 2008 alone, several other FE colleges, and even new HEIs, have made contact with The Research Centre for information, advice and guidance on various aspects of running The Research Centre within a Further Education College (FEC).

The website aims to be more than a simple, static portal by allowing those visiting the site to comment on information, contribute to discussion forums with like minded individuals and add information that follows the interests of the Research Centre. Please browse the site where all the reports and bulletins can be accessed and downloaded for free and view our current projects. These publications also highlight the wealth of knowledge, expierience and skills The Research Centre has to offer potential funders, whilst also ensuring that maximum information flow is gained and shared freely. Visit the 'News' tab for the latest information from a range of relevant organisations and see the 'funders' tab for the latest grants and funding available.

The Research Centre has two main foci: educational research and evaluation. While both themes still cover a diverse range of subjects and issues, the reduction in breadth enacted in 2007 has concentrated the knowledge, experience and skills of its staff and allowed a greater depth of knowledge and specialism to grow in those areas. While externally funded projects figure strongly in The Research Centre’s portfolio of projects, the centre is inevitably committed to supporting ‘internal’ innovations and developments to ensure best practice is observed within City College Norwich keeping it at the forefront of teaching innovation.

Projects conducted by The Research Centre are best viewed by scanning the R&D Bulletin, project reports or current projects pages. Projects have covered a diverse range of disciplines from education to social exclusion, addressed research, evaluation, project management and even product development. The Research Centre has secured funding totaling over £1.67 million to date, awarded from European, national, regional and local organisations. Due to its  high reputation, often institutions now approach The Research Centre directly to request our involvement. Involvement at the earliest stage of any project development is the best approach to ensuring a successful outcome! A sample of the areas of research interest include: raising aspirations and the widening participation agenda, social inclusion/exclusion, diversity issues, curriculum development and quality assurance, student experience (especially the HE in FE sector), e-learning and ICT, individual learning plans, initial Teacher training and pedagogy, learning styles and non-participation issues.
